Volunteer Opportunities

The library could use volunteers to help with the following jobs on a continual basis.  Please volunteer at the circulations desk.

Straightening the shelves:  This involves standing books in an upright position with spines facing forward for easy access. This is a daily need.

Cleaning books:  Involves mixing cleaning solvent with water, then microwaving it. Use this to wipe front and back of books; then dry books.  The board books in the children’s room would be an excellent place to start.  Very easy to do.

Designing bulletin boards (6):  These can be done monthly, or quarterly.  Please check with library staff for themes.  There may be subjects or events that the library staff would like to advertise.
Children’s room bulletin boards:
1.      Above computers (quarterly?)
2.      Parents display
3.      Story room (quarterly?)
Young Adult section (quarterly?)
Two at north entrance to the right as you walk in.

Designing display cabinets in north and south entrances:  Would love to see these changed out monthly.  Please check with library staff on themes.  There may be subjects or events that the library staff would like to advertise.  We encourage incorporating books, movies, music, or other library memorabilia into the display where possible.

Shelf-reading: Can be done for as little as 15 minutes.  Merely scan the library shelves and correctly shelve any books that are out of order.  Staff is happy to direct you to shelves that need special attention and will train you to shelve according to LHPL’s needs.

Shelving Books:  Check with both the children's librarian and circulations desk personnel to see if help is needed with the returned books.

Assisting with Homebound Program: Justine Thomas, Homebound Coordinator, could use help when she visits the nursing homes. Duties may include helping the elderly with craft projects, assisting with set-up and tear-down of projects, and helping plan/make craft items.

Seasonal possibilities include:  helping with summer reading program; assisting the youth librarian with Scholastic Book Fair in July; displaying and shelving book sale items; working at book fairs in April and October; assisting with seasonal parties and programs; providing refreshments for gatherings; contacting volunteers for various functions; clipping articles in the Indiana Room; helping in the kitchen during both the children's and adult's programs; or, volunteering to serve on the Friends Board.  Volunteers are needed throughout the year.

Contact Board Member Doris Dilger (937-2470) with questions OR to volunteer for seasonal activities.
